Pubblichiamo oggi alcuni disegni tecnici che mostrano il progresso del progetto Pylons of the future – Dancing with Nature – risultato vincitore del premio Terna per i piloni elettrici del futuro. A breve pubblicheremo informazioni dettagliato su questo progetto di architettura parametrica che rappresenta, per HDA, una grande sfida di architettura e ingegneria.

Terna è un grande operatore di reti per la trasmissione dell’energia elettrica, primo operatore indipendente in Europa e settimo al mondo, con oltre 63mila km di linee gestite.

Un’azienda al suo secondo “contest” internazionale sui nuovi tralicci, con una forte connotazione tecnologica e al tempo stesso con grande attenzione ad ambiente, costi dell’energia, evoluzione della “rete del futuro”.

Abbiamo riscoperto questa intervista a Hugh Dutton (in italiano) realizzata in occasione dell’evento e pubblicata da edilportale.

Nell’intervista, oltre al progetto della Centrale Termica Iride Energia, Hugh Dutton cita due importanti lavori sul territorio italiano: la passerella olimpica a Torino, realizzata nel 2006, e i piloni elettrici “Dancing with Nature” che sono attualmente in fase di test e produzione per la società Terna.

For the atrium of an office building in Hong Kong, HDA were commissioned by Swire Properties to make a study for a sculptural staircase which would give an identity to the iconic building. These images refer to one of the proposals we have developed.

Located on the border of the popular Wan Chai district, and the business district of Central, the work draws on the playful atmosphere of Wan Chai and its many neon lights. The atrium consists of the reception on the 1st floor and a garden on the 2nd, and the staircase which creates the connection the two floors with a spiral movement inspired by the circular form of the basic geometry of the building which is centered in an octagon.

The work is composed of glass ribbons on the ceiling of the garden level which eventually become the walls and railings of the staircase. The glass is supported by a mesh of spirals and extruded stainless steel suspension straps. The ensemble is lit by strip lights in LED neon reminiscent of Wan Chai, which also highlight the movement of the spiral.

We are very happy to announce that our design team, led by Heerim Architects & Planners, won first prize for the design competition of PASSENGER TERMINAL 2 for the Incheon Int. Airport.

An airport is a front door for a nation, like the grand railway stations of capital cities of the industrial age. The airport’s design is therefore iconic and symbolic of the Korean nation. The Heerim team identified the Phoenix as that icon evoking Korean history and future ambitions of reunification.
The roof of 30 hectares is designed as an active energy system, a “breathing roof” with an ambition to transform a potential energy glutton into a positive environmental asset. The general intent of the design for the user is a fluid, calm and luminous passage through the terminal. The flowing geometry of the structural grid-shell systems is visible through the light filtering roof. This delicate skeleton of optimal and funicular shapes provides articulation of the passenger flow as well as forming the expression the wings of the symbolic bird.
Minimal facades in cable and energy performance glass further address the question of sustainability by optimising energy transmission through the skin whilst maintaining clear views of the aircraft, the runways and the surrounding landscape.

A few weeks ago there was a real buzz around electric pylons, their design and their future relationship with the landscape. On twitter, @ballardian, @ethel_baraona were tweeting links, contents and ideas about this topic and at the same time Hugh Dutton sent me this link and Dezeen was asking for high-resolution images for a publication of Pylons of the future – Dancing with Nature -, a project that we are building in Italy for Terna company (images below).

The Royal Institute of British Architects in London have launched a competition to design new electricity pylons for the UK: organised in collaboration with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and National Grid, the competition is open to architects, designers, engineers and students.

Guardian.co.uk has recently published the article Pylon competition seeks alternative to ‘industrial soldiers’ mentioning our pylon design:
A Paris-based British designer, Hugh Dutton, won a competition for the Italian energy company Terna with slender Y-shaped pylons inspired by the first tender shoots of a young plant. The first prototypes are set to go into production soon. He said creating a more positive image for pylons to try to head off local opposition was a key concern for clients, but added that his more elegant design was more expensive.

“Traditional pylons are the very symbol of insensitive intervention of mankind on the landscape,” he said. “These industrial soldiers that march across the countryside, galvanised steel trellis towers, are certainly optimal and efficient structures, but lack poetry.”

The Longest Bench, Littlehampton by Studio Weave

“The longest bench in Britain was opened to the public in Littlehampton, West Sussex on the 30th July 2010. The bench seats over 300 people along Littlehampton’s promenade, overlooking the town’s award-winning Blue Flag beach. Designed by Studio Weave, the structure sinuously travels along the promenade, meandering around lampposts, bending behind bins, and ducking down into the ground to allow access between the beach and the Green. Like a seaside boardwalk the Longest Bench rests gently on its habitat and adapts to its surroundings while like a charm bracelet it connects and defines the promenade as a whole, underlining it as a collection of special places that can be added to throughout its lifetime.”

“To inspire and develop the Longest Bench, Studio Weave worked with Connaught Junior School. The children showed how they use the promenade, what they think of it, and what it means to them, giving insights into the site that an architect would never otherwise have. Two important incidents along the length of the site are the two shelters. The children told they felt these were dirty and unsafe. They were dividing rather than connecting the green and the beach.”

On the Way to the Sea by Derman Verbakel Architecture

Called On the Way to the Sea, the project comprises a series of fixed arches around which canopies and clusters of benches and tables on wheels can be arranged to facilitate social gatherings.
The project was designed for the Bat Yam Biennale of Landscape Urbanism.
