The Skylon was a futuristic-looking, slender, vertical, cigar-shaped steel tensegrity structure located by the Thames in London, that apparently floated above the ground, built in 1951 for the Festival of Britain.
A popular joke of the period was that, like the British economy of 1951, “It had no visible means of support”.

Many narrow streets and alleyways off Oxford Street, London are currently misused and underdeveloped. These under regarded areas are ideal not only for improvement, but also for relatively unconventional design opportunities. Our proposal acknowledges this by providing an architectural intervention that subtly draws attention to the building through the intrigue of a sculptural façade. Inspired by the art work of Lucio Fontana large glazed areas orientated towards the sky are slashed into the façade, maximising the natural light available in this narrow street.

Nous reprenons le titre de ce post publié par arkinet pour rendre hommage à Thomas Heatherwick, ce “very brilliant english designer” peut être pas assez connu en France dont on a dernièrement entendu parlé pour le pavillon d’Angleterre à l’expo de Shangai.
Nous avons eu la chance de travailler avec lui sur plusieurs projets, comme nous avons dejà raconté ici, et nous avons la chance de recevoir ses “greetings cards” à chaque Noel (image ci-dessous).
