Geometry Generated with the Form Finding Application

For Complexitys this post represents the first one dedicated to more technical and scientific aspects, which is an important topic developed at HDA. This post is the first entry of our new ENGINEERING category.

With many architectural complex forms being studied at HDA, the complexity of the structural issues does not allow us to entirely separate architecture and engineering. In other words architectural aspects, in terms of geometry research for example, are deeply linked and driven by the structural behaviour of the constitutive materials. The choosing and defining of an optimized and efficient form for the structure are elaborated on during several exchanges between architects and engineers in order to fulfil all design criteria.

A recent article on ArchDaily talked about our ‘in progress’ footbridge at La Roche sur Yon.
We’re pleased to be a subject of interest for a such an important architecture website, and what we appreciate even more is the public feedback and the list of comments left, which have inspired some interesting reflections about our work here at HDA.
I would particularly like to share some thoughts on the idea (or even obsession) of “being original” in architecture, the meaning of copying someone or something, and what this could imply nowadays, in a time when everybody is talking about copyright and how it’s changing with new communication technologies.

This is a very complex subject and I don’t have any firm ideas or theories, but I would like to use this post just to share some thoughts on it.
In the article I’m referring to, the 80% (maybe more) of comments have a “this project looks like…” format, that’s why I’m mindfully using the word “obsession” above.
My first reaction was to think that these comments were negative, simply because they were saying that at HDA we are not original. But when I heard my principal Hugh Dutton saying happily “they’re comparing us to Calatrava, that’s great!”, I understood that my interpretation was very subjective.
In fact, being original has something of an obsession for architects, but today it’s maybe becoming an antiquated attitude.

Complexitys blog was conceived amid much brainstorming and deliberation, and with much enthusiasm, but with little idea of exactly which direction it would proceed in. Little more than two months after its birth and we’ve been surprised and encouraged to see the first important result of our devotion to, and investment in, an open online communication of architecture.
As Domenico Di Siena from Ecosistema Urbano Office explained in our “web for architects” training in Paris, “an architecture office’s blog is not a portfolio or a place to talk about themselves, but rather an incredibly powerful tool to create a community around the office’s activities and interests”.
Two months into the project and several blogs worldwide have begun talking about complexitys, so these words are now becoming reality.
