“The longest bench in Britain was opened to the public in Littlehampton, West Sussex on the 30th July 2010. The bench seats over 300 people along Littlehampton’s promenade, overlooking the town’s award-winning Blue Flag beach. Designed by Studio Weave, the structure sinuously travels along the promenade, meandering around lampposts, bending behind bins, and ducking down into the ground to allow access between the beach and the Green. Like a seaside boardwalk the Longest Bench rests gently on its habitat and adapts to its surroundings while like a charm bracelet it connects and defines the promenade as a whole, underlining it as a collection of special places that can be added to throughout its lifetime.”
[...]
“To inspire and develop the Longest Bench, Studio Weave worked with Connaught Junior School. The children showed how they use the promenade, what they think of it, and what it means to them, giving insights into the site that an architect would never otherwise have. Two important incidents along the length of the site are the two shelters. The children told they felt these were dirty and unsafe. They were dividing rather than connecting the green and the beach.”

The video below presents the design thinking of the architect and researcher Neri Oxman, who is proposing a different way of thinking about the design of things around us: instead of thinking about forms of objects she suggests to understand first their performance and “how they should or need to behave in space as most natural systems do, such as trees”.

These purposes are especially interesting for us as in a past article titled Methodology of complexity (in French) we have defined form as “the spatial configuration of a physical object that is responsible for the relations between that object and the environment”.

I especially like the way she explains the professional relationship between architects and engineers, that I think it’s strictly related to what Hugh Dutton called “Integrated approach to design” in his paper “An integral approach to Structure and Architecture” available below.

“The construction industry’s recent technical developmentes in engineering and material science and the building industry’s new technical capacities provide new opportunities for architecture. These innovations can be used to integrate structure and the building envelope, or “skin”.

For an integrated approach to design, borders between the distinct professional, industrial, and construction territories must be transgressed. The success of this exploration depends on architects understanding of the capacities and constraints of each separate field during the design process.”

“Architect and designer Neri Oxman is assistant professor of media arts and sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she directs the Mediated Matter research group. Her group explores how digital design and fabrication technologies mediate between matter and environment to radically transform the design and construction of objects, buildings, and systems. Oxmanís goal is to enhance the relationship between the built and the natural environments by employing design principles inspired by nature and implementing them in the invention of digital design technologies. Areas of application include product and architectural design, as well as digital fabrication and construction.”

As we read at businessinnovationfactory.com, “She studies the structure of a leaf to learn how a single material can readjust itself, change directionality, and redistribute its organic matter where necessary to achieve strength in one place, flexibility in another. She observes how material behaves and what forms result from that behavior. From a biological standpoint, Oxman considers the functions of the leaf. From the perspective of a material scientist, she evaluates the physical construction of its fibers. She refers to this process as “translating” from scale to scale. It’s just a matter of “moving the dial,” she says.”

…
How are new design tools and software changing design of clothes and fashion accessories?
As we are always interested in exploring the boundaries of architecture and 3D design, we have found that some fashion designers may use the same softwares that we use in HDA.

For example, you can try and play with an origami pattern design tool called ORIPA, made by Jun Mitani (his blog here) and then discover that Japanese designer Issey Miyake used theory of origami to build his Folded Clothes, which consist of “one piece of fabric, a three-dimensional shape reduced to two, and the fifth dimension, which Miyake describes as the moment the garment is worn and comes to life “through the communication among people.” (In physics, the fifth dimension is a hypothetical extra dimension after the three spatial ones and the fourth, which is time. Some astrophysicists argue that the fifth dimension may be the universe that we live in.)”

…

This reminds the project below called Digital Portraits, where “Three people are portrayed by turning their 3D data into 2D sewing patterns and converting these into articles of clothing. Linked with their biographical memories, a digital twin of the body is created.”

…

We can also find another interesting connection between these concepts and the idea of eco-effiectiviy.

Refinity explains that “the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Everybody participates in the fashion industry and has the opportunity to make it more environmentally friendly. An important strategy to work environmentally friendly is eco-efficiency. This means as that is as efficient as possible, in which more is done with less. This is a good start, but not the solution. [...]“Designers should think about the new life of a product during the design process, which will make materials upcyclable. This is eco-effectivity; taking into account the effects of certain design choices on the environment.”

Refinity defines itself as a consultancy company for eco-effective ways of designing fashion (photos below).

The document below contains some research we have been exploring for DFS facade design workshop in which we have worked with textures, geometry of origami and complex folded surfaces.

Recently we have been often asked “What is Parametric Design and Architecture?”

Even if we are daily working with this notions, the answer is not so easy.
We’ll now start thinking about how we designers and architecture could give a comprehensive defintion of such concepts.

image: Theverymany

.

In the meanwhile we’ll just try to find links between parametric design and other notions that could help us to have a general idea of the territory we are moving through.

For example, we could start with the notion of “growth” and evolution. In his work “On Growth and Form”, D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson advocated structuralism as an alternative to survival of the fittest in governing the form of species. The author thought that the form and structure of living organisms are determined by physical laws and mechanics more than by evolution rules.

He explains that “an organism is so complex a thing, and growth so complex a phenomenon, that for growth to be so uniform and constant in all the parts as to keep the whole shape unchanged would indeed be an unlikely and an unusual circumstance. Rates vary, proportions change, and the whole configuration alters accordingly.”

This considerations reminds the way how the blog Data is Nature describes Marc Fornes research project Theverymany project: “Theverymany is, as its name suggests, a speculative look into the world of organic structures made up of very many parts. Structures grown through applying plant modeling mathematics to produce rich complex architectural structures.”

- 1 jour ( Atelier ) : mercredi 22 septembre
