<p>Abbiamo riscoperto <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLu-rpViI6A" target="_blank">questa intervista</a> a Hugh Dutton (in italiano) realizzata in occasione dell&#8217;evento e pubblicata da <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLu-rpViI6A" target="_blank">edilportale</a>.</p>

<p>We are very happy to announce that our design team, led by <a href="http://www.heerim.com/" target="_blank">Heerim Architects &amp; Planners</a>, won first prize for the design competition of PASSENGER TERMINAL 2 for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incheon" target="_blank">Incheon</a> Int. Airport.</p>
<p><span id="more-2746"></span></p>
<p>An airport is a front door for a nation, like the grand railway stations of capital cities of the industrial age. The airport&#8217;s design is therefore iconic and symbolic of the Korean nation. The <a href="http://www.heerim.com/" target="_blank">Heerim</a> team identified the Phoenix as that icon evoking Korean history and future ambitions of reunification.<br />
The roof of 30 hectares is designed as an active energy system, a <strong>&#8220;breathing roof&#8221;</strong> with an ambition to transform a potential energy glutton into a positive environmental asset. The general intent of the design for the user is a fluid, calm and luminous passage through the terminal. The flowing geometry of the structural grid-shell systems is visible through the light filtering roof. This delicate skeleton of optimal and funicular shapes provides articulation of the passenger flow as well as forming the expression the wings of the symbolic bird.<br />
Minimal facades in cable and energy performance glass further address the question of sustainability by optimising energy transmission through the skin whilst maintaining clear views of the aircraft, the runways and the surrounding landscape.</p>

<p>The video below presents the design thinking of the architect and researcher <a href="http://web.media.mit.edu/~neri/site/index.html" target="_blank">Neri Oxman</a>, who is proposing a different way of thinking about the design of things around us: instead of thinking about forms of objects she suggests to understand first their performance and &#8220;how they should or need to behave in space as most natural systems do, such as trees&#8221;.</p>
<p>These purposes are especially interesting for us as in a past article titled <a href="http://complexitys.com/francais/architecture-hybride-1010-le-role-des-logiciels-de-calcul/" target="_blank">Methodology of complexity (in French)</a> we have defined form as &#8220;the spatial configuration of a physical object that is responsible for the relations between that object and the environment&#8221;.</p>

<p><em>&#8220;Architect and designer Neri Oxman is assistant professor of media arts and sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she directs the Mediated Matter research group. Her group explores how digital design and fabrication technologies mediate between matter and environment to radically transform the design and construction of objects, buildings, and systems. Oxmanís goal is to enhance the relationship between the built and the natural environments by employing design principles inspired by nature and implementing them in the invention of digital design technologies. Areas of application include product and architectural design, as well as digital fabrication and construction.&#8221;</em><br />

<p>As we read at <a href="http://businessinnovationfactory.com/iss/innovators/neri-oxman" target="_blank">businessinnovationfactory.com</a>, <em>&#8220;She studies the structure of a leaf to learn how a single material can readjust itself, change directionality, and redistribute its organic matter where necessary to achieve strength in one place, flexibility in another. She observes how material behaves and what forms result from that behavior. From a biological standpoint, Oxman considers the functions of the leaf. From the perspective of a material scientist, she evaluates the physical construction of its fibers. She refers to this process as “translating” from scale to scale. It’s just a matter of “moving the dial,” she says.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Nous vous présentons aujourd&#8217;hui certains des projets étudiant de l&#8217;atelier dirigé par <a href="http://hda-paris.com/">Hugh Dutton</a> à l&#8217;<a href="http://www.esa-paris.fr/" target="_blank">Ecole Speciale d&#8217;Architecture</a> de Paris ( Semestre Automne 2010 | assistante Elisa Querub)</p>
<p>Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un programme pour un stade de performance basé sur le concours pour le stade rugby <a href="http://arena92.sgti.fr/" target="_blank">Arène 92</a> dans le grand axe à la Défense.</p>

<p>L’atelier etait divisé en deux parties. Une premier moitié de recherche et analyse du programme et le contexte de la Défense. Chaque groupe devait trouver une concept architectural clair, attribuant un slogan au projet. La second moitié du semestre l’atelier s’est concentré sur la reflection structurelle, notamment pour les elements de toiture de grande portée au dessus les gradins, puis la couverture ouvrable. Les maquettes ont etes utilisées beaucoup  comme outil de reflection stimulant l’intuition de chacun pour un sens de faisabilité structurel.</p>

<p>Here is the introduction of the paper:</p>
<p>Structural glass has become a commonplace component in architecture. Early pioneering work on structural glass that created the spherical bearing articulated bolts for suspended tempered glass and tensile cable wind bracing cable trusses was carried out by Peter Rice and the <a href="http://rfr.fr/" target="_blank">RFR</a> group at la Villette, Paris in the early ‘80’s. The author had the good fortune of participating in that project and co-authored Structural Glass with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Rice" target="_blank">Peter Rice</a> telling the story of the development process.</p>
<p>For <a href="http://hdaparis.com" target="_blank">HDA</a>, it is the architectural potential of structural glass that is the most appealing to me. At the time, maximal transparency was the objective of our work. The architect of the museum, Adrien Fainsilber, wished that the Museum have an open dialogue with the park, using the south facing Bioclimatic Facades as a ‘zone tampon’ between the museum and the park. The glazing system consisting of 2m x 2m panels of tempered glass were suspended from each other using investment cast components in stainless steel. An entire bay measuring 8m x 8m is an autonomous structural glass panel<br />
gravity supported by the glass itself and using the glass surface to stabilize the cable system. The ‘cable truss’ was developed as an alternative to glass fins. The cable truss itself was a pioneering development of non-linear analysis engineering at the time.</p>
<p><a href="http://rfr.fr/" target="_blank">RFR</a>’s work has attempted to explore the architectural potential of structural glass, applying it in varied contexts with maximal attention to the architectural message of each case rather than an expression of the technology itself. There has been notable attention to the recent concerns of sustainable design.</p>

<p>For those who read French, the following is a passage from a Hugh Dutton&#8217;s text about transparency, glass and light in architecture:</p>
<p>&#8220;Je crois que le Verre Structurel a permis la naissance d&#8217;une nouvelle architecture de la transparence et avec une nouvelle qualité centrée sur la notion de lumière. Également, cela a rendu possible aussi une approche sculpturelle au traitement de la matière des structures porteuses. Dans ce sens, la <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Pyramide_Invers%C3%A9e" target="_blank">pyramide inversée de Pei</a> me parait un exemple brillant de cette symbiose entre verre structurel et lumière. On y vois l’éclatement des points iridescentes, la clarté et, enfin, une révérence quasi sacrée de l’objet en verre meme 20 ans après sa conceptoion et realisation.&#8221;</p>

Odile Decq, directrice de l&#8217;école, présente <a href="http://www.esa-paris.fr/ecole">ainsi</a> les propos de l&#8217;école: &#8220;L’École Spéciale d’Architecture est née il y a plus de 140 ans, d’une  révolte contre l’académisme. Elle s’est toujours régénérée dans la lutte  inventive dans sa pédagogie comme dans ses structures. Aujourd’hui,  alors que toutes les écoles d’Europe s’ordonnent dans une réforme dont  l’effet second pourrait être une forme d’uniformisation du savoir, l’ESA  doit renouveler son ancestrale promesse : être Spéciale.&#8221;<br />

<p>Il primo luglio, Hugh Dutton ha ricevuto il premio &#8220;Architetture Rivelate&#8221; per il progetto della Centrale Termica Iride Energia, che abbiamo realizzato a Torino insieme all&#8217;architetto <a href="http://www.buffi-associes.com/" target="_blank">Jean Pierre Buffi</a>.</p>

<p>Il progetto è descritto dal comunicato stampa dell&#8217;<a href="http://www.to.archiworld.it/OTO/Engine/RAServePG.php" target="_blank">Ordine degli Architetti di Torino</a>, come un &#8220;Brillante intervento scenografico, diurno e notturno, che qualifica la ingombrante presenza della macchina tecnologica  nel nuovo contesto urbano di Spina 2.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="http://complexitys.com/francais/les-entretiens-de-complexitys-hugh-dutton-contre-le-branding-de-larchitecture/" target="_blank">Hugh Dutton </a>animera principalement la conférence. J&#8217;interviendrai plus personnellement pour parler de la passerelle de La Roche sur Yon, en Vendée, qui a été inaugurée le 6 Février 2010. <p><strong>A)	Quel est, dans ta vision, le rapport entre l’architecture et  l’ingénierie?</strong></p>
<p>Pour moi l&#8217;architecture et l&#8217;ingénierie ces sont comme une femme et un homme mariés. J&#8217;aime imaginer l&#8217;architecture comme quelqu&#8217;un de libre et aléatoire et l&#8217;ingénierie comme un mari rigoureux.<a href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_G%C3%A9raldy" target="_blank"><br />
Paul Geraldy</a> disait que &#8220;il faut se ressembler un peu pour s&#8217;entendre, mais qu&#8217;il faut être un peu différent pour s&#8217;aimer&#8221;. C&#8217;est comme-ça que je conçois le rapport entre l&#8217;architecture et l&#8217;ingénierie.<br />
Dans ce rapport, chaque une de deux partie veut se compléter elle-même par l&#8217;autre, dans un échange d&#8217;énergie continu. Comme <a href="http://complexitys.com/francais/les-entretiens-de-complexitys-hugh-dutton-contre-le-branding-de-larchitecture/" target="_blank">Hugh Dutton</a> a déjà dit, pour moi aussi la situation actuelle de la profession témoigne, sauf certaines exceptions, d&#8217;un état de crise de ce couple. Les deux partenaires s&#8217;éloignent et veulent exercer un pouvoir sur l&#8217;autre, ce qui provoque une maladie dans la relation. Les amoureux deviennent ainsi deux monstres qui se font la guerre.</p>

<p><strong><span id="more-1270"></span></strong><strong>B)	Nous sommes dans un moment de grands changements: comment  imagines-tu la figure de l’architecte dans le futur?</strong></p>
<p>Je ne crois pas qu&#8217;il y ait un architecte du futur et un architecte du passé. Je pense plutôt que les architectes devraient apprendre à accepter très humblement leur rôle au service de l&#8217;architecture, de l&#8217;art de la conception et de la construction. Et cela implique pour moi, bien évidemment, de sortir du système du spectacle.<br />
Dans le passé, dans le présent et dans le future, l&#8217;architecture ne peux pas être du spectacle. Son but n&#8217;est pas de créer du divertissement.<br />
Je pense que les architectes devraient avoir conscience du présent avant de se projeter dans le futur. La sur-information aujourd&#8217;hui fait que tout dure et passe très rapidement, et les villes construites par les architectes reflètent cette vitesse. Je veux dire qu&#8217;il serait bien parfois de s&#8217;arrêter et ne penser que au moment présent, au lieu de se projeter dans le futur avec cette attitude que j&#8217;appellerais &#8220;surconsommation de temps&#8221;.</p>

<p><strong>C) Aujourd’hui, les technologies numériques multiplient nos  possibilités ainsi que les outils de conception: dans ta profession,  quel est ton rapport à cette complexité qui semble caractériser le monde  contemporain?</strong></p>
<p>Moi je fais plusieurs choses: <a href="http://iomanuele.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">je peins</a>, je fais <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/iomanuele/" target="_blank">des photos</a>, j&#8217;organise des <a href="http://www.eccetera.org/" target="_blank">evennement artistiques et culturels</a>, je dessine et je réalise des salles de bain. Dans certaines de ces activités il n&#8217;y pas de trace de ces technologies de la complexités. Je dirais que il n&#8217;y que du papier, des couleurs, parfois des fax. Dans d&#8217;autres de ces activités, les technologies sont fondamentales et inspiratrices.<br />
Comme artiste, je me sers des technologies nouvelles de communication pour interagir avec vitesse avec plusieurs personnes.<br />
La communication est une continuité aujourd&#8217;hui. Tout est partout, et cette idée me donne le vertige: j&#8217;aime ça.<br />
J&#8217;aime l&#8217;instantanéité de ces outils, ainsi que le fait qu&#8217;il soient à la porté de beaucoup de gens et accessibles à tout moment.</p>

<p>Oui, j&#8217;aime les architectes&#8230;, mais eux, est-ce qu&#8217;ils m&#8217;aiment?<br />
S&#8217;ils n&#8217;aiment que leur ego, alors je ne les aime pas.</p>
