It’s always surprising when you see something you have designed springing up.
A weird and exciting feeling viewing how things slowly move from a virtual model towards the world of reality…

Images refers to the Winter Garden Jiang Tai project, in Beijing. In this case, HDA works as specialist designer with Benoy.

The roof triangles mesh has been drawn with a rhinoscript routine in order to obtain a fluid ans smooth result, while respecting a large number of technical and architectural constraints.

Recently we have been often asked “What is Parametric Design and Architecture?”

Even if we are daily working with this notions, the answer is not so easy.
We’ll now start thinking about how we designers and architecture could give a comprehensive defintion of such concepts.

In the meanwhile we’ll just try to find links between parametric design and other notions that could help us to have a general idea of the territory we are moving through.

For example, we could start with the notion of “growth” and evolution. In his work “On Growth and Form”, D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson advocated structuralism as an alternative to survival of the fittest in governing the form of species. The author thought that the form and structure of living organisms are determined by physical laws and mechanics more than by evolution rules.

He explains that “an organism is so complex a thing, and growth so complex a phenomenon, that for growth to be so uniform and constant in all the parts as to keep the whole shape unchanged would indeed be an unlikely and an unusual circumstance. Rates vary, proportions change, and the whole configuration alters accordingly.”

This considerations reminds the way how the blog Data is Nature describes Marc Fornes research project Theverymany project: “Theverymany is, as its name suggests, a speculative look into the world of organic structures made up of very many parts. Structures grown through applying plant modeling mathematics to produce rich complex architectural structures.”

Geometry Gym is  a company based in the UK, formed by Jon Mirtschin, a structural engineer of 10 years experience.
Geometry Gym is aiming to provide innovative design tools within rapid response time frames needed by projects.

As a graduate engineer, Jon joined Connell Wagner (now Aurecon) in Melbourne, having graduated from the University of Melbourne with a double degree in Civil Engineering and Computer Science.  Projects he worked on included Eureka Tower (300m tall residential tower), the Melbourne Cricket Ground Northern Stand Redevelopment (MCG) and Wembley Stadium.  All projects challenged the capability of the software used to analyze, design and document these structures, and Jon frequently found himself developing custom and innovative scripts and spreadsheets to link and automate generation, processes and data information flow.

In 2005, Jon left Melbourne bound for a working holiday in London, an agency sent him to an interview at Expedition, which is not a typical engineering consultancy.  Jon discovered Rhino3d, and the fantastic development and design platform it provides. Infinity Footbridge (IStructE Champion Award Recipient), the 2012 Olympic Velodrome and 55 Baker Street are great examples of efficient form finding and trail blazing design and documentation.  All heavily utilized programs and plug-ins developed by Jon, in the evolutionary state of the plug-ins available today.

Late 2009, Jon left Expedition to form Geometry Gym, as a means to act as a sub-consultant and to distribute the software tools to the wider design industry (although the tools were also externally beta tested during the 10 months prior on some fantastic projects).  Why the name Geometry Gym? Well gyms challenge and demand their visitors aspiring to achieve goals and improvements.  And geometric manipulations and modifications take up so much time of consulting engineers and architects that all improvements are for the benefit of the industry.

Jon is particularly driven and interested in improving repetitive and time consuming tasks in consulting design, and in reducing the amount of replicated modelling work requiring coordination and checking. The premise of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and exchanging/extracting models for particular purpose and needs is core to the development.

A significant differentiation of the service provided to users of the Geometry Gym tools is prompt support and custom development.  Typical CAD/Software firms have lead times of months and years to implement customer suggestions and requirements, making them redundant for active projects, Geometry Gym endeavours to assist within days or weeks.

The Geometry Gym Blog provides demonstrations, insights and examples of how to use the Rhino3d tools being developed.  Jon’s take on how to explore the geometry of some well known projects including the Beijing Water Cube, 2012 Olympic Stadium and British Museum Great Court Roof have been popular with designers and students.

Nanni Moretti est assez connu en France mais je pense que Ecce Bombo, peut-être un de ses films les plus révélateur de la société italienne, est un peu resté dans l’oubli. Dans une des scènes, Moretti il pose avec insistance la question qui titre ce post ( quel travail fait-tu? ) à une jeune pseudo-hippie qui vit sans vraiment travailler. Elle répond alors “je sais pas…je fais des trucs, je vois des gens…” (en italien “faccio cose vedo gente”).

Bref…dernièrement sur Twitter, nous avons repris, avec Domenico Di Siena, Ethel Baraona et des autres, la question “en fait c’est quoi ton travail?” pour ironiser non pas sur ceux qui ne travaillent pas, mais sur ceux dont la profession échappe à une définition précise: architectes qui ne construisent pas, maisons d’édition qui publient sur le web au lieu de faire des livres, designers qui ne sont ni architectes ni ingénieurs (ou bien tout les deux)…

En générale, l’hybridation des métiers fait que souvent on ne peut plus vraiment définir de façon claire ce qu’on fait. De là l’idée de ce post: comme nous avons annoncé hier sur twitter, HDA réfléchit à la possibilité d’embaucher un architecte.
A la réception de premières appels des intéressés, nous nous sommes tout de suite rendus compte qu’il est fondamentale de bien expliquer ce qu’on fait pour bien communiquer quel type de profil nous recherchons.

C’est pourquoi nous avons eu l’idée de parler des différents type de travaux que nous faisons à l’agence, pour essayer de donner une vision de l’hétérogénéité de notre travail quotidien. Comme nous avons expliqué dans l’entretien à Hugh Dutton, notre équipe est composée d’architectes et ingénieurs: les exemples qui suivent montrent un travail qui tient compte de ces deux aspect du projet, que nous considérons comme étroitement liés.

On peut le comprendre dans un sens très strict, comme le font les algoristes, en exigeant qu’il n’y ait rien d’autre que le calcul, ou tolérer que le calcul brut soit suivi de retouches diverses dans des logiciels graphiques, voire intégré à des photo-montages. Il est évident qu’aucune école artistique ne peut conserver bien longtemps de frontière bien rigoureuse et qu’il y aura toujours quelqu’un pour mélanger les genres.

Mais au debut Les Algoristes ont commencé à se regrouper suite à une conférence “Art et Algorithmes” au SIGGRAPH en 1995. Le terme a été inventé et définit par Jean-Pierre Hébert, suivant l’algorithme en pseudo-code suivant :

On ne trouvera pas que des images fractales. Les techniques fractales sont souvent utilisées en arrière plan pour donner de la complexité aux images, mais il y a d’autres façons de façons de donner de la complexité (cf les images faites au traceur de courbes par Roman Verostko ou les pavages plans de Escher), et puis il y a des images algorithmiques qui recherchent plutôt une simplicité “zen” (cf: Jean Pierre Hébert je vous conseille d’aller voir son site c’est une mine )

Les algoristes ne représentent pas une technique numérique particulière, mais plutôt une attitude philosophique, celle d’arriver à un résultat artistique par une pure démarche algorithmique. Le résultat peut être une image aussi bien que de la sculpture. Les algorithmes ne sont pas forcément numériques, mais doivent faire partie de l’origine de l’oeuvre.

Algoristes au sens large:

Fondateurs: Al-Khawarizmi ( “Kitab al-jabr wa al-muqabalah” La science de la restauration et la réduction, Khiva c.778-C.850), Nicolas Chuquet ( “Tripartie en la science des Nombres ” Triparty Nombre des sciences. Paris, 1445-1488),

Dans les arts, il a toujours existés des algoristes très nombreux, notamment dans les arts premiers, populaires et traditionnels.  En architecture, calligraphie, les tapis,les textiles, les pavages, la musique et la poésie, les algoristes ont été à jamais présent.

Les algoristes des temps modernes inclurait certainement Josef Albers, Max Bill, Wassily Kandinsly, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Piet Mondrian, François Morellet, Kenneth Nolland, Seurat dans la peinture, Le Corbusier entre autres en architecture; Bella Bartok, Arnold Schönberg et Edgar Varèse longtemps après que Johan Sebastian Bach et Antonio Vivaldi dans la musique, Georges Perrec, Oulipo & Alamo dans la littérature, etc …

Les algorithmes peuvent définir une forme, une pièce, un style, une période ou un corps entier de metier. Ce qui s’est passé depuis l’aube de la civilisation, au Bauhaus et du constructivisme, vers l’abstraction géométrique en Peinture, à ce jour. Et maintenant, de nombreux algoristes, mais de loin pas tous, utilisent des ordinateurs comme l’un de leurs outils de travail. Les ordinateurs aident les définir, mettre en œuvre ou d’utiliser les algorithmes qui façonnent leur travail.

Il en est de Yoshiyuki Abe, Peter Beyls, Larry Cuba, Jean-Francois Colonna, Andrew Crompton, Hans Dehlinger, Brian Evans, Chaim Goodman-Strauss, George W. Hart, Atelier Ho!, L’AAI (artificielle), Xah Lee, Vera Molnar, Gerhard Rohringer, Bruce Shapiro, Karl Sims, Simon Thomas, et bien d’autres, chaque algoriste developpe ces propres outils.

Pour la génération contemporaine de algoristes, les algorithmes doivent être précisément définies, au point de devenir naturellement des programmes d’ordinateur. Au-delà des concepts intuitifs, vaguement défini par le schéma de composition, chaque étape doit être planifiée dès la vision de l’œuvre, définie analytiquement, calculé. Les contraintes techniques abondent et doivent être maîtrisés. Évidemment, cette discipline qui requiere rigueur, ne peut s’appliquer partout, mais pour certains, il est en train de devenir une importante source d’inspiration.

Jeudi prochain 25 mars à 18h, nous participons à une conférence à l‘Ecole de La Villette en collaboration avec Rhinoforyou, spécialiste en Rhino e plug-ins. Après une introduction plus générale sur le logiciel Rhinocéros, nous allons intervenir vers 19h pour présenter notre contribution centrée sur l’architecture paramétrique, avec le but de la situer sur l’axe des évolutions historiques dans la conception architecturale. Dans ce sens, le paramétrique et les nouvelles technologies sont interprétés comme un outils capable de dépasser la standardisation du modernisme.

Après une introduction théorique et une description de la méthodologie de l’agence HDA, nous allons présenter des projets et des réalisations développes avec rhinoscript et grasshopper: les pylônes - Dancing with Nature -, les études de façade que nous avons déjà présenté ici, notre travail pour le projet de la Philarmonie de Jean Nouvel que nous avons déjà présenté à Lyon au Rhino User Meeting (vidéo ci-dessous), et le travail de génération de géométrie à simple courbure que nous avons montré ici.

Complexitys blog was conceived amid much brainstorming and deliberation, and with much enthusiasm, but with little idea of exactly which direction it would proceed in. Little more than two months after its birth and we’ve been surprised and encouraged to see the first important result of our devotion to, and investment in, an open online communication of architecture.
As Domenico Di Siena from Ecosistema Urbano Office explained in our “web for architects” training in Paris, “an architecture office’s blog is not a portfolio or a place to talk about themselves, but rather an incredibly powerful tool to create a community around the office’s activities and interests”.
Two months into the project and several blogs worldwide have begun talking about complexitys, so these words are now becoming reality.

We would like to thank these blogs personally, as they encourage us to keep working on ours:
