Books

This morning when I arrived at HDA I found a lot of interesting books on my table selected by Sébastien Perrault, Mitsu Edwards and other collaborators of the team. At the office these books are used as reference and source of inspiration. They might be helpful to some of our readers so here is a quick presentation with a full online versions of 2 of them.

You can find more references on the reading list of HDA on tumblr:

Many narrow streets and alleyways off Oxford Street, London are currently misused and underdeveloped. These under regarded areas are ideal not only for improvement, but also for relatively unconventional design opportunities. Our proposal acknowledges this by providing an architectural intervention that subtly draws attention to the building through the intrigue of a sculptural façade. Inspired by the art work of Lucio Fontana large glazed areas orientated towards the sky are slashed into the façade, maximising the natural light available in this narrow street.

You can find an English report about this footbridge here.

Geometry Generated with the Form Finding Application

For Complexitys this post represents the first one dedicated to more technical and scientific aspects, which is an important topic developed at HDA. This post is the first entry of our new ENGINEERING category.

With many architectural complex forms being studied at HDA, the complexity of the structural issues does not allow us to entirely separate architecture and engineering. In other words architectural aspects, in terms of geometry research for example, are deeply linked and driven by the structural behaviour of the constitutive materials. The choosing and defining of an optimized and efficient form for the structure are elaborated on during several exchanges between architects and engineers in order to fulfil all design criteria.
